Elbow

Here you can read more about different treatments for elbow

Lateral epicondylalgia (Tennis elbow)

Tennis elbow is a painful condition over the attachment of the forearm muscles on the outside of the elbow. The mechanism of origin is usually static or heavy strain on the muscles that stretch the wrist and fingers, e.g. tennis, computer work or handicraft work. The treatment is primarily to avoid stress such as pain. You should seek the help of a physical therapist for ergonomic advice and specific exercises. The physiotherapist can also help with other palliative treatment methods. If the problems last for more than about 6 months, surgery may be appropriate. The operation involves dividing the muscle attachment.

Preparation for surgery

Information about preparations for the operation will be sent to you when you register for the operation, but you can also find parts of this information on the website.

On the day of surgery

The day of surgery at Huddinge Orthopedics begins with an enrollment call and you are prepared for surgery. The operator will talk to you before the operation. The operation takes place under anesthesia or local anesthesia and takes about 30 minutes. Waiting time may occur on the day of surgery.

After the operation

You can go home a couple of hours after the operation. For optimal pain relief, you will receive the prescriptions you need before going home. The surgical wound is surrounded by an outer dressing and an inner dressing. You can take off the outside after two days, but the inside must remain until the stitch removal, which takes place at Huddinge Ortophedics 14 days after the operation. Cover the dressing when showering, for example with a plastic bag and rubber band. Avoid bathing until the sores are completely healed. Please keep your hand elevated to reduce swelling. It is important to move the fingers and the shoulder as much as the pain allows. The length of the sick leave varies depending on the job you have, but is most commonly 2-8 weeks. You must not lift heavy for the first four weeks. It takes a long time for the muscle attachment to heal and it usually takes a few months before it is possible to evaluate the final result of the operation.

After this, movement training of the elbow joint begins, but you must avoid bending more than 90° during the first four weeks. The nerve is a sensitive structure and it takes a long time for the nerve to recover. It is common to have persistent and even increased symptoms in the first period after the operation, and the nerve may be more sensitive to local pressure.

Nerve pinch in the elbow

The ulnar nerve runs on the inside of the elbow. If this nerve is subjected to pressure or a pinch, it can cause numbness and pain along the inside of the forearm and out into the little and ring fingers. The symptoms are increased by strong bending of the elbow and many have problems at night. The first step in the treatment is to review which aspects of work or leisure time provoke the problems. At night, a splint that keeps the elbow straight can be used. If the problems persist, surgery may be necessary. The operation exposes the nerve and ensures that it runs as it should in relation to the bone spur on the inside of the elbow joint.
